What are those white spots we sometimes get on our fingernails?

and what do they meanWhat are those white spots we sometimes get on our fingernails?
lol when I was little, my parents use to tell me that you get them everytime you tell a lie. What are those white spots we sometimes get on our fingernails?
The White spots on finger nails are minor injuriess caused by hitting them against something. These spots known as leukonychia are very similar to bruises but normaly take a couple of days or weeks for them to show up. Somtimes they can be caused by a vitamin deficiency or an infection under the fingernail, but they are very rare cases. They only apear under minor injuries and if you get your finger smashed too hard they will turn a dark blue or black.
Those are furrows or ridges. You get them from either lifting heavy objects or damaging your fingernail slightly in some way. They're nothing to worry about and everyone gets them. They aren't a fungus or a disease and they heal naturally. As far as what they mean? The mean you need to relax with your handy work and take care of your nails :)

EDIT: They are NOT from a calcium deficiency. Calcium deficiency creates brittle nails, not ridges, furrows, or lines.
They are wrong! The white spots are caused by you hitting your nails against something. It's kinda like a scratch. I wondered the same thing, then i accidentally banged my hand against something, looked down, then there was a new white spot. Not enough calcium? Dumbest thing I've ever heard.
I'm pretty sure they are from calcium buildup. However, I have also heard they are ';bruises'; from knocking into objects.

However, since I went vegetarian, I notice them much less. So I don't know for sure.

Maybe a bit of both.
They are bruises under your fingernail, the fleshy skin under your finger nails. They surface as white, i am unsure why but they are just bruises, they are not bad, and they easily come about.
for all of you that said there calcium defencies-- there not.

its calcium deposits , and thats why the white is formed
You need more calcium or zinc possibly.
They are bruises on your nail beds from a calcium deficiency. It makes them sensitive and they bruise easily when you hit them.
Idk but I have them sometimes too!!!! Well sometimes it's from like hitting them on something really hard
it means you're gonna have ur fingernails falling off very soon .

no ur just having a lack of vitamin C, i used to get them too.
It means your body is lacking vitamin A, D, E, and calcium.
Those white spots are from your nails growing after a time when you didn't have enough calcium.
i heard that it means you need more vitimen C.

drink a glass of orange juice and you'll be good to go!
